What’s this RPG-thing anyway?
A tabletop role-playing game (or pen-and-paper role-playing game) is a form of role-playing game (RPG) in which the participants describe their characters’ actions through speech. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.
If you’ve found this site, you probably know what an RPG is. But just in case you don’t, Wikipedia’s description is pretty good, although it leaves out one important bit in it’s lede:
While role-playing games are games, you don’t play to win. The journey is the goal or however you want to think about it, in the end it’s about the act of playing and experiencing a story together. This podcast will hopefully give you a chance to experience those stories with us.
Why podcast this?
Most of us have been playing together for roughly four years now and starting with this campaign, we’ve decided to try something new and recorded ourselves playing.
We’re not just doing this because it’s something new but because we want to spread the fun of playing RPGs and specifically GURPS. On top of that, we hope that it helps us improve our play in a few ways. For one, we’re hoping that it helps us stay in character more, as that is something we don’t do enough and would make it easier and more fun to listen to. On the other hand, we talk over each other a bit too much and that’s something we should get rid of. Lastly, we hope that we’ll be more descriptive of things in game, which we’re currently doing a bit too little.

On a technical note, I’m still trying to get everything right with the recording. We didn’t want to spend a lot of money on this project just yet, and we’re still learning what is necessary to make it work properly, so bear with us. It will get better starting in the second episode, when we replace the ceramic dice tray the GM used until now with a felt-padded one…
On top of that, I’m getting better at editing and that will make future episodes easier to listen to.Download .mp3 (141.8M)
